Alpine Club of Canada's State of the Moutains Report

The State of the Mountains Report is a commitment by the ACC to provide accessible, current, and accurate information about the forces that affect Canadian mountain places, ecosystems, and communities.

In addition to the feature essay on safeguarding unique ecosystems and species in Canada’s mountainous region, this year’s State of the Mountains Report includes essays on the future of Canada’s ski industry in a warming climate, Indigenous cultural burning practices in Northern British Columbia, partnerships between Jasper National Park and Indigenous Nations for caribou recovery efforts, sustainable energy projects at ACC’s backcountry huts, Whitebark Pine recovery, research on life found in deep sea environments, a Canadian preview on the 2025 United Nations International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation, the state of permafrost in Canadian mountains, and more. Mount Queen Bess North Ridge

I felt the solid rock beneath me. I closed my eyes, relaxed, and breathed in deeply. I reminded myself that things were going well. I felt good. The fear was present, but I could overcome it. When I was ready, I continued on. This was a practiced task, one that is essential for managing risk. You must experience the fear, analyze it plainly, and then act – it cannot control you. I sat straddling Mount Queen Bess’s North Ridge, both legs pointing down towards its sheer faces as I gazed upward. Around a rocky outcropping fifteen metres below me stood my climbing partner Jude Thompson, belaying and silently hoping that I was experiencing easy terrain.
