State of the Mountains Report
As part of our original club constitution, we are committed to the promotion of scientific study of alpine and glacial regions, and to the dissemination of knowledge concerning mountains and mountaineering. We partner with Canadian mountain research initiatives such as the Canadian Mountain Network and provide financial and in-kind support to many scientific projects and expeditions in alpine environments through our Environment Fund.
The State of the Mountains Report
In 2011, The Alpine Club of Canada (ACC) published its inaugural State of the Mountains Report, revealing the dramatic effects of climate change on Alberta and British Columbia’s alpine regions. This initiative stemmed from the ACC’s dedication to enhancing public understanding of the environmental and cultural dynamics shaping these high-altitude environments.
Today, the ACC continues this legacy by producing annual reports in partnership with mountain researchers, community members, and affiliated organizations. The State of the Mountains Report provides readers worldwide with insights from experts who have devoted extensive time to studying our alpine environments. Each contributor brings profound expertise and personal experience to illuminate how changes in Canadian mountain ecosystems impact both human communities and natural systems, sharing their knowledge through firsthand accounts and photography.
