Vancouver

The Vancouver Section was formed in 1918 during the early years of the exploration of the Coast Range and continues to thrive today. We currently have about 1,100 members. Plus there are several hundred members of the University Varsity Outdoor Club and the Simon Fraser University Hikers Club with whom we are affiliated through the ACC’s Student Outdoor Club Program. The Vancouver Section runs two backcountry huts including the Jim Haberl Hut near Mt. Dione (pictured above).

The Vancouver Section welcomes those with any level of experience in the mountains. Many people join the club to get their start in skiing and climbing, or just to spend time in the mountains. New members who already have strong outdoor skills will find themselves in good company.

Huts And Other Activities

The section owns and directly operates two backcountry huts in the Tantalus range near Squamish: the Tantalus Hut at Lake Lovely Water and the Jim Haberl Hut in the Dione-Serratus Col. The Vancouver Section and the Whistler Section, through the Spearhead Huts Society, jointly own and operate the Kees and Claire Hut in the Spearhead Range near Whistler. Vancouver Section members receive discounted accommodation rates and early booking privileges at these huts.

The section runs a wide variety of trips including: hiking, mountaineering, rock climbing, ice climbing, backcountry skiing/snowboarding, snowshoeing, indoor gym evenings, and family outings. Trips range from evening rock climbing sessions and morning exercise hikes to multi-day camps and expeditions. The section runs on average 2-4 scheduled trips/events every week.

We also offer summer and winter training events ranging from evening classroom sessions to multi-weekend courses. Another form of training is our summer mentoring program for intermediate climbers who are serious about improving their skills.

Section members can borrow some gear from the section. Section members can also take advantage of numerous discounts offered by gyms, guides, and gear manufacturers.

The Vancouver Section is a member and active supporter of the Federation of Mountain Clubs of BC which advocates for access and protection of BC’s backcountry. As part of the FMCBC we are particularly proud of having taken a leading role in preserving the very important Smoke Bluffs rock climbing area in Squamish.

The section annually hosts the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour. We are also a sponsor of the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival.

Meetings and Socials

Formal section meetings (socials) are held monthly excluding July, August and December. These include a slide show and socializing over beverages and snacks. Meetings are usually held on the evening of the fourth Tuesday of the month.

Informal socials often take place after our almost weekly indoor and outdoor rock climbing evenings.

Trip Schedule

All of our trips, gym/crag evenings, courses, mentoring sessions, socials, and other events are shown on our calendar.
