Mountain Culture

ACC Publications

The ACC’s Mountain Culture Committee aims to celebrate the club’s relevance to Canadian culture through the presentation of literature, art, history and heritage, mountain related science, and exchanges of ideas with other alpine organizations. A large portion of the Mountain Culture portfolio is the publication of original, high-quality mountain writing in books and periodicals.

Canadian Alpine Journal

Since 1907, the Canadian Alpine Journal (CAJ) has been the definitive annual chronicle of Canadian mountaineering. More than just a publication, it serves as a comprehensive archive capturing the year’s most significant climbing achievements, breathtaking photography, and remarkable explorations. The journal blends technical route descriptions with personal narratives, scientific insights, and occasional wit, offering a multifaceted view of climbing experience.

Representing climbing adventures from every corner of Canada and featuring expeditions by Canadian climbers worldwide, the CAJ is a testament to Canada’s rich alpine heritage. Published in July, the journal is exclusively distributed to Alpine Club of Canada (ACC) members who have selected the CAJ upgrade with their membership.

The Alpine Club of Canada Gazette

The Alpine Club of Canada’s Gazette is a member magazine published annually in the summer, offering a diverse range of content including current club events, true adventure stories from members across the country and around the globe, safety tips, gear recommendations, and articles on historical, scientific, and cultural aspects of mountain environments. The publication, which includes mountain photography and classified ads, is available to all ACC members, with Canadian residents having the option of receiving either a digital or hard copy, while USA and international members receive digital copies only.

Summit Series

Since 1999, the Summit Series has celebrated the remarkable individuals who have shaped Canada’s mountain community through their roles as explorers, mountaineers, volunteers, outfitters, and storytellers. The series honors the selfless contributions of Canada’s public safety professionals and members of the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides, capturing the essence of our mountain culture and deepening our appreciation of Canada’s mountain heritage. Through carefully documented history and personal narratives, these booklets help forge a distinctly Canadian connection to our precious mountain landscapes. The Alpine Club of Canada proudly presents these compelling stories, crafted by our nation’s most distinguished mountain writers.

State of the Mountains Report

The State of the Mountains Report represents the Alpine Club of Canada’s (ACC) dedication to delivering clear, timely, and reliable information about the changing dynamics of Canadian mountain regions, their ecosystems, and communities. First published in 2011, the inaugural report highlighted the dramatic effects of climate change on Alberta and British Columbia’s alpine environments. Now an annual publication, the report brings together mountain researchers, community members, and partner organizations to share their expertise and firsthand experiences of how changes in Canadian mountain landscapes are impacting both human communities and natural ecosystems.
