This guidebook is an update to Gord McArthur’s 2013 guidebook East Kootenay Climbs. Since the publication of 2013 guidebook 150 routes have been established in the region including the creation of entirely new climbing area. The quality of the rock and route development in the region is attracting more climbers every year, and an updated guidebook was needed to cover development over the last 7 years as well as expand the coverage to include climbing areas farther north into the Columbia Valley and east through the Elk Valley. This guide covers crags and climbing areas around Fernie, Elko, Jaffray, Fort Steele, Lumberton, Wycliffe, Kimberly, Canal Flats and Windermere in the East Kootenay region of British Columbia.

This territory is also shared with the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III. Before the signing of Treaty 7, and prior to the establishment of provincial boundaries, this region was also used by the Ktunaxa and the Maskwacis people.
