Jacques Lake Cabin

Jacques Lake Cabin

The Jacques Lake Hut is situated in a clearing on the north side of Jacques Lake in Jasper National Park. Originally a Parks Canada warden cabin, this winter-only cozy log cabin is perfect for families with backcountry travel experience and small groups. The hut is accessible by touring skis or snowshoes. Cross-country skis and pulk sleds are not recommended due to the sidehill and undulating nature of the trail.

Backcountry winter destination in Jasper

A Jasper Park patrol cabin, the Jacques Lake Cabin is the newest backcountry hut operated by the ACC. This cozy log cabin is perfect for families and small groups and is an accessible ski or snowshoe trip close to the Jasper townsite. The 12 km trail is relatively flat and the approach involves very little elevation gain.

Note: the hut is only open in the winter months.

Trail Access

Backcountry touring skis or metal-edge nordic skis are suggested if the gear is accessible to individuals, but snowshoes are also suitable for the trek into the hut. Classic nordic skis are not recommended as there is a fair bit of sidestepping down embankments as well as creek/river crossings.

Two km east of the Jasper townsite, follow Maligne Road 28km to parking lot on the south end of Medicine Lake. Follow the summer trail to Jacques Lake. The hut is on the far (north) end of the lake. For approach distances and terrain, please see the summer trail description on Parks Canada website. Approach time is 4-7 hours depending on your party and the amount of trail breaking.

You will be passing by avalanche terrain on the way into Jacques Lakes Cabin – please have up-to-date knowledge and plans in case of an emergency.

Note that there is significant danger in skiing across the lakes on this approach and multiple parties have reported breaking through ice. The Summit Lakes is very shallow, but Beaver and Jacques Lakes are potentially more hazardous. View the winter access brochure from Parks Canada.
