Trip Description

This program brings together young-at-heart adventurers to explore the breathtaking trails surrounding Wates-Gibson Cabin. It offers an immersive backcountry experience tailored for adventurous individuals aged 55 and over. Based out of the historic Wates-Gibson Hut in Jasper National Park’s Tonquin Valley, participants will explore breathtaking alpine trails, including wildflower-filled meadows and panoramic mountain vistas. This four-day journey emphasizes camaraderie, comfort, and connection with nature, making it ideal for those seeking both adventure and meaningful outdoor experiences.

This adventure welcomes both returning friends and newcomers aged 55 and older -while there’s no maximum age limit, participants should be medically fit for high-altitude conditions and sustained activity. The program offers rest day options while still requiring good baseline fitness and the ability to carry a 9-11kg (20-25lb) day pack for several hours.

This guided adventure includes accommodation at the Wates-Gibson Hut and all group gear. Food is not provided for this course. A complete gear list and equipment rental information can be found here.

Itinerary

Experience the wild beauty of Jasper National Park on a guided backcountry hiking adventure based out of the historic Wates-Gibson Hut. This multi-day journey combines stunning alpine scenery, expert guidance, and the camaraderie of a small group as you explore some of the park’s most iconic and remote trails. Whether you’re drawn by wildflower-filled meadows, sweeping mountain vistas, or serene valley lakes, this trip offers an unforgettable immersion into the heart of the Canadian Rockies.
Pre-trip meeting
An online pre-trip meeting will be organized 10-20 days prior to the trip for all participants to talk about the itinerary and all trip details.
Day one
Meet your group at the Edith Cavell Parking Lot. Once at the trailhead, your guides will brief you on a few more things, such as bear spray use, Leave No Trace principles, and to help you adjust your pack before heading out to the hut.
Day two & three
Enjoy Jasper National Park trails during the day and relax in the hut in the evening.
Day four
The last day will be spent enjoying every minute of the same beautiful wilderness before slowly finding our way back to the trailhead and back down to the vehicles to complete the trip!

Explore the beautiful Tonquin Valley from the Wates Gibson Hut.

The Tonquin Valley, nestled within the vast wilderness of Jasper National Park, represents one of the most spectacular alpine settings in the Canadian Rockies. This remote backcountry treasure is defined by the jagged Ramparts mountain range—a dramatic wall of peaks rising dramatically above the pristine waters of Amethyst Lakes, creating a landscape that has captivated adventurers, photographers, and mountaineers for generations.

This camp is guided by Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG) certified Hiking guides. Our maximum 8:1 guiding ratio will ensure that everyone gets the support they need to undertake this impressive trek.

Adventure Hazards

Terrain

Risks include but are not limited to: ​Cornices and crevasses. Trees, tree wells, and tree stumps. Cliffs, creeks,  rocks and boulders. Holes and depressions below the snow surface. Variable and difficult snow conditions. Snowcat roads and road ranks. Fences and other man-made structures. Impact or collision with other persons, vehicles or objects. Encounters with domestic or wild animals. Loss of balance or control. Becoming lost or separated from the group. Slips, trips, and falls. 

General Hazards

Risks include but are not limited to:Slips trips and falls indoor or outdoor. Equipment failure. Infectious disease contracted through viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi which may be transmitted through direct or indirect contact. Negligence of other persons, including other guests. Negligent first aid. Negligence of the guide Including failure to take reasonable steps to safeguard or protect you from, or warn you of risk, dangers, hazards, on participating in ACC activities

Communication and Rescue

Risks include but are not limited to:Communication can be difficult and in the event of an accident, rescue and treatment may not be available. Adverse weather may also delay the arrival of treatment and transport out of the field. If an Injury occurs in challenging terrain movement to an evacuation point may be slow.
