Is This Camp For You?

Intermediate

First things first. This camp is for those 55 years or older to enjoy the camaraderie and social opportunity of being in a group of similar age and ambition. There is no maximum age limit on the camp, but you must be medically able to handle the demands of high altitude and strenuous exercise. You will have the option to take a rest day in the hut or possibly on an easier hike, but at minimum you must have a good level of fitness and be able to carry up to a 9 – 11kg (20 – 25lb) day pack for several hours.

Trip Description

Hike in Style in Jasper National Park Our 55+ mountaineering camps are for young-at-heart hikers who want to connect with other adventurers and explore the stunning hiking at Wates-Gibson Cabin. Whether you are looking for stunning vistas, the perfect patch of wildflowers, or connections with other hikers, this camp has something for you! For 2025, our 55+ program will be journeying to Jasper National Park. Taking advantage of the spacious and well-equipped Wates-Gibson Cabin to fully explore this gorgeous landscape with other passionate hikers will surely be an unforgettable experience. Past participants of this camp disagree about whether the highlight of the camp was the experienced and friendly guiding staff, the spectacular hikes, or the friendly, supportive atmosphere. If you’ve experienced the camp before, we’d love to see you back with us! If it’s your first time, come try it out. If you are over 55 and seeking company and challenges with others in this age range, this camp is for you!

This camp is guided by Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG) certified Hiking guides. Our maximum 8:1 guiding ratio will ensure that everyone gets the support they need to undertake this impressive trek.

*Guiding Staff for a trip sometimes have to be swapped out due to unavoidable circumstances. In this event ACC staff with contact you as soon as possible to update you on any changes to trip staffing

Objectives

Wates-Gibson offers access to amazing hiking from the moment you leave the trail head. The Astoria River Trail, starting at the Edith Cavell Trailhead, is used to access the hut. You may also get to experience:
  • Cavell Meadows Trail
  • Maccarib Pass and Tonquin Hill
  • Lakes and meadows within Emerite Valley
  • And many more!

Day-by-Day Adventure Itinerary

Pre-Trip Meeting
An online pre-trip meeting will be organized 10-20 days prior to the trip for all participants to talk about the itinerary and all trip details.
Day 1
Meet your group at the Edith Cavell Parking Lot. Once at the trailhead, your guides will brief you on a few more things, such as bear spray use, Leave No Trace principles, and to help you adjust your pack before heading out to the hut.
Day 2 & 3
Enjoy Jasper National Park trails during the day and relax in the hut in the evening.
Day 4
The last day will be spent enjoying every minute of the same beautiful wilderness before slowly finding our way back to the trailhead and back down to the vehicles to complete the trip!

Food, Accommodation and Rentals

Food

To keep the cost of this course as low as possible for participants, food will not be provided as part of the course. Please bring 4 lunches 3 breakfasts and 3 dinners as well as your favorite snacks!

Accommodation

The Wates-Gibson hut will be your accommodation for this trip. This large and well-equipped log cabin provides a fantastic basecamp for exploring what the Tonquin Valley has to offer.

Rentals

If you don't have everything on the gear list and aren't ready to invest in your own, there are many awesome local businesses that rent out all of the equipment you will need. Be sure to reserve your rentals ahead of time to make sure everything you need is available for you when you need it.

  • 4 days of professional guiding at max 8:1 ratios by certified ACMG hiking guides

What are the Risks?

Cornices and crevasses. Trees, tree wells, and tree stumps. Cliffs, creeks,  rocks and boulders. Holes and depressions below the snow surface. Variable and difficult snow conditions. Snowcat roads and road ranks. Fences and other man-made structures. Impact or collision with other persons, vehicles or objects. Encounters with domestic or wild animals. Loss of balance or control. Becoming lost or separated from the group. Slips, trips, and falls.

General Hazards

What are the Risks?

Slips trips and falls indoor or outdoor. Equipment failure. Infectious disease contracted through viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi which may be transmitted through direct or indirect contact. Negligence of other persons, including other guests. Negligent first aid. Negligence of the guide Including failure to take reasonable steps to safeguard or protect you from, or warn you of risk, dangers, hazards, on participating in ACC activities

Communication and Rescue

What are the Risks?

Communication can be difficult and in the event of an accident, rescue and treatment may not be available. Adverse weather may also delay the arrival of treatment and transport out of the field. If an Injury occurs in challenging terrain movement to an evacuation point may be slow.
