2010 Patron of the Guides Ball:
Pat Morrow
With his camera always at the ready, Pat Morrow lives by the photographer’s creed f8 and be there. The results of his passion for photographing some of the most beautiful landscapes and precious remote cultures of the world, as well as his life-long commitment to climbing and the mountain environment have made Morrow an ideal Patron of the 2010 Alpine Club of Canada Mountain Guides Ball.
Pat has spent his life following his insatiable curiosity into the great mountain ranges of the world. He’s participated in 20 high altitude expeditions worldwide, with more than 500 days of trekking in the Himalaya alone. His drive and determination lead him to become the first person to climb and photograph his way to the highest summits on the seven continents, which he completed in 1986, becoming only the second Canadian to summit Everest along the way, in October 1982.
Beginning with helping to create the Purcell Wilderness Conservancy, Morrow continues to contribute his photographic and filmmaking skills, as well as his personal activism, to several major conservation initiatives including the Wildsight - Education in the Wild initiative.
Throughout his career, he has received numerous accolades including seven National Magazine Awards for photography, the Order of Canada (1987), the Summit of Excellence at the 1990 Banff Mountain Film Festival, and the ACC President’s Award in 1988 and 1996. He has co-authored or illustrated three books on the Himalaya and two on the Yukon, and contributed photos to dozens of other books and hundreds of magazines. Shifting to video and film work 10 years ago, Morrow has shot or worked on dozens of mountain-related films. He and his wife Baiba won the Peoples’ Choice Award at the 2005 Banff Mountain Film Festival for their documentary, The Magic Mountain. Morrow currently chairs the Conrad Kain Centennial Society, whose goal is to promote the legacy of the first mountain guide ever hired by the ACC in 1909.
