Mike Mortimer, ACC Director of External Affairs, has been named North American delegate to the Union Internationale des Associations d’Alpinisme

The Alpine Club of Canada is proud to announce that Mike Mortimer was unanimously elected as the North American delegate to the governing Council of the Union Internationale des Associations d’Alpinisme (UIAA) at its recent meeting held in Berchtesgaden, Germany. Mr. Mortimer, who is the first Canadian ever elected to the UIAA Council, replaces the American Alpine Club’s Bill Putnam who is retiring from the UIAA after serving for more than 32 years.

The UIAA is the recognized international federation for mountain sports and the acknowledged expert on all international climbing and mountaineering matters. The UIAA promotes access for the freedom to enjoy mountain sports in a responsible way, with minimum impact on the environment. The UIAA helps to protect mountain areas and climbing sites from damaging developments and encourages development of local communities. The UIAA has a Summit Charter which sets out the values and benefits of mountain sports and a dossier of proposals to promote cooperation and peace, protection of the environment, and sporting excellence. The UIAA was formed in 1932 by representatives from18 countries who met in Chamonix, France, and agreed on specific tasks to encourage mountaineering for the young, develop international standards, raise awareness about safety, and protect the environment.
